- Peas probably have originated in the sub-Himalayan plains of northwest India.
- There are many different varieties of peas available (yellow, black-eyed, and purple peas) with green peas being the most frequently consumed.
- Peas are a very good source of vitamin K, vitamin A, and vitamin C.
- Peas have essential B-complex vitamins such as pantothenic acid, niacin, thiamin, and pyridoxine.
- Peas are a rich source of many minerals such as calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and manganese.
- Peas have a low glycemic index (GI).
- Green peas contain antinutrients that may interfere with the absorption of some nutrients and cause digestive distress. However, this is not a problem for most people.
- Only about 5% of the peas grown are sold fresh, the rest are either frozen or canned.
